Founded in 2008, The Nomad African Trust is a non-profit organisation that aims to preserve and uplift the people. places and animals of our magnificent continent. Drawing heavily on Nomad Africa Adventure Tours’ knowledge, experience and expertise in Africa, the Trust intends providing assistance to deserving causes, quickly and effectively.
The Trust aims to access funding from players in the tourism industry and other related sectors, in order to help and protect the very people, places and animals that these parties earn their living from.
As such we aim to provide focused and specific help across these three fronts.
Our goal is to effect real change by ensuring funding is spent in such a way so as to create permanent and long lasting benefits to our beneficiaries.
Please take a few moments of your valuable time to peruse our materials and seriously consider the possibility of joining us in this exciting new adventure.

OUR GOALS
REVENUE
The Nomad African Trust is committed to raising R1 000 000 by its first financial year end. We are aiming to raise R5 000 000 by the end of 2012.
FUND DISTRIBUTION
The Nomad African Trust is determined to direct as much of the donors money to the beneficiaries as is possible.
We intend to ensure 70% of the funds reach the recipients in year one, the balance being utilised for trust administration.
We anticipate that this figure will rise to 90% by the end of 2012.
OUR APPROACH
In deciding how to proceed with the Vision of the Trust we had to determine how we were going to approach the multitude of problems Africa faces every day.
And so we came up with some guiding principles..
While a lot of work being done all over the Continent to ease the suffering of millions of people, until population control is a priority for all, the hope of ever eliminating the many problems our continent suffers from will be outstripped as more and more people are added to the problem. We believe family planning and education are critical to achieving this mind shift. At the same time, many organisations focus on uplifting through modernization, education and the like. While these are noble efforts we believe without jobs these drives are bound to fail. And so it is that we intend on focusing heavily on job creation and key skill development. We also intend focusing on basic needs. Food, shelter and health care are basic human needs and sadly, in Africa, are all too often found wanting.
Another focus of our drive is to support and help uplift rural communities as we believe that the source of many of the problems facing Africa lie in the Challenges facing rural communities.
Our goals for the people of Southern Africa are:
♦ To have a real impact on population growth control
♦ To help people help themselves by way of job creation
♦ To assist communities on a basic needs level
♦ To spend the majority of our efforts in rural based programs
Instead of the usual sole focus on the remote wild lands of Africa we intend to also focus on the urban environment and their immediate surroundings.
Areas of successful tourism operations are for the most part already protected by their position in the spotlight. It is the lesser known places of Africa that often need the greatest help.
We believe that diversity should remain one of the most treasured characteristics of this beautiful world.
Our goals for the places of South Africa are:
♦ To help limit the environmental impact of people and businesses
♦ To safeguard diversity
♦ To include the urban environment in our plans
♦ To focus on some of the lesser known, but no less spectacular regions
Again, a huge amount of focus is already placed on the select few animals that generate the most interest. Our objective is to assist some of the lesser well known animals in dire need of help.
We intend getting involved in the breeding and relocation of species to their natural habitats to restore the former glory of the various regions of the continent.
In addition, we intend involving ourselves in anti-poaching and protection of those creatures that need it.
Our goals for the animals of South Africa are:
♦ To have a real effect on breeding and the relocation endeavours in Southern Africa
♦ To focus on some of the lesser known , but not less important species
♦ To make real headway in the field of anti-poaching and protection
Our vision is that of a land, where people live in harmony with the earth

PEOPLE
The Trust intends assisting the people of Africa in general, and Southern Africa in particular. Careful consideration has gone into the selection of the beneficiaries listed below.
House of Judah Community – Knysna (Western Cape)
The House of Judah Community near Knysna was established in 1993 and over the last 17 years they have worked hard to uplift the lives of those in and around their community. Many of these goals have been achieved by focusing of the building of a B&B to accommodate tourists, as well as establishing a nature trail and the expansion of a crèche to service their community. Funding from Nomad African Trust is managed by the Edge of Africa Team.
Ngwavuma Mpontshini School & HIV/AIDS Orphan Care- (Zululand)
Hlengiwe Mthembu at Ngwavuma in Zululand is an inspiration to many and foster mother to a growing number of HIV AIDS orphans. She has established a small garden catering for the needs of over 400 pupils, and the growing number of adopted orphans that she cares for. The garden which she constantly seeks to expand, gives much needed nutrition for the children, and for many of them the only meal they receive is from the school. Funding from donations via NAT is managed by Zisize Ingwavuma where the money has gone to extending and improving existing facilities, construction of a playground and netball courts, food expenses and more.
PLACES
The Trust wishes to protect and revive the magnificent open spaces of Africa.
Gwexintaba Community
This community in the heart of the Wildcoast lies in an area of un-spoilt natural beauty. However, as the ever growing population in the area places increased pressure on the natural resources, action needs to be taken by the community to improve their agricultural practises to reduce erosion, inhibit damage to the soil and improve productivity. The community is also tapping into its tourism potential by starting a local campsite and is hoping that this and improved skill levels, such as skills being taught at the leather making workshop run by Louie Fourie, will increase income levels and improve the standard of living. They have a volunteers programme that has helped Louie’s dream grow daily!
ANIMALS
Where would Africa be, now and in the future, without its magnificent and unique wildlife. The Trust intends ensuring that this wildlife is around for future generations.
The Cape Leopard Trust
The Cape Leopard Trust aims to optimally facilitate conservation of the Cape’s predator diversity through simultaneously implementing conservation strategies, research projects and tourism initiatives. It will also educate and encourage the youth of disadvantaged communities to have a vested interest in the environment. In addition to their ongoing work out in the field, the CLT also have some exciting additional programmes.
- The Cape Leopard Trust’s Education and Outreach Programme
- Family Group Trips
- Local Environmental Club
- School Presentations
- and many more amazing projects
In addition to donations you can also assist by “Adopting-a-spot”. The Adopt-A-Spot Programme is the latest sponsorship option that allows you “time-share” in one of the leopards under the research of the CLT. As there are not that many leopards to go around so to speak and many people who are interested in leopards, but cannot afford the costly adoption option, the CLT devised a way of allowing many people access to information on a leopard through the adoption of a spot on the leopard ‘Spot’. This is a great opportunity for schools and large corporate to get involved in a sponsorship drive.
In addition to their leopard programme, the CLT team have also established another 2 predator focused projects, namely the Black Eagle Project and the Cederberg Caracal Project.

Spekboom Project – Carbon Offset
Our vision is that of a land, where people live in harmony with the earth

What is your Carbon Footprint all about?
A carbon footprint is “the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, an event (such as travelling) or a product.” Carbon Dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gasses responsible for global warming.
To help combat this The Nomad African Trust has developed the Spekboom Carbon Offset project to allow subscribers of the programme to offset the carbon created during a variety of activities.
During photosynthesis carbon is absorbed from the atmosphere, reducing the unnaturally high levels that mankind has caused. The planting of trees and vegetation is a key and sustainable way to offset carbon. One of the best plants when it comes to carbon absorption is the Spekboom (or Elephant’s Food as it is commonly known).
This project can be tailored to meet a wide range of carbon offset requirements and settings. Two examples of this are the “Green Seats / “Green Beds” packages that have been specifically designed to give tourists the opportunity to enjoy a carbon neutral stay / holiday.
What is Spekboom?
|
Spekboom is an evergreen succulent shrub that can reach a height of 2,5m and occurs mainly in the South-Eastern Cape, especially around Baviaanskloof and the Addo Elephant National Park. It has enormous carbon storing capabilities and its capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is equivalent to that of moist, subtropical forest. The use of Spekboom delivers the most value for money in carbon capturing terms, and it also has the most significant ecological benefits in terms of replenishing degraded areas. |

How does it work?
The first and most important step in the carbon offset process is determining what carbon emissions have been created. We provide this service for a number of activities such as flights, car rental and accommodation, but other factors are not beyond our scope. Many clients choose to use online carbon calculators to ensure impartiality however and simply provide us with the kg’s of carbon they would like to offset.
Tourism clients are able to choose to offset their carbon footprints when booking their tour / accommodation by choosing to buy a“Green Seat” or a “Green Bed”.
Tour agents may sell either “Green Seats” or “Green Beds” to their clients under licence from us and we will provide the participating agents with the following logos to be used on their marketing material, brochures and website:

Once the funds have been paid to us and the per hectare planting price has been achieved we then distribute funding to our implementation partners in the selected planting areas and planting begins.
All the funds that are collected are administered by The Nomad African Trust who manages the project in conjunction with Living Lands, the Department of Water Affairs, Rhodes University and a number of other partners and community projects. Participants will be issued with an e-certificate with further details and verification contact options. Please be aware that “Green Beds / Green Seats” are not tradable Carbon Credits and are purely used for Carbon Offsetting purposes.
What does this all mean?
This project not only reduces global warming but also benefits the local ecosystems by protecting the soil, reducing water loss and improving bio-diversity. In addition to this the project employs members of the local communities and positively affects people’s standard of living.
Carbon offsetting is an excellent vehicle for cementing your company’s environmental commitment and your commitment to sustainable
